Introduction to Dyeing – online course

It was back in the 1970's when I was first involved in dyeing. I was a Supervisor on a Space Dye production line. Back then, space dyed yarns were even used broadloom, a trend that did not last long. I then became involved in carpet printing and continuous dyeing; both techniques were very big in the 70's and 80's.

When Paul Bakker and I created the International Textile Flooring Academy it was our aim to provide an excellent online resource for the carpet and rug industry that not only would give access to great information, but also provide meaningful training courses.

ITFA is pleased to have added a great introductory course on dyeing to its online training platform at

This is a course that explains the process of dyeing and gives a very good overview of this critical area that is so important within the textile industry and is another course that would have helped me so much in early career.

This course is authored by well-known Dyeing Consultant - Ian Smith. Ian is a Fellow of the Textile Institute. Ian studied textile chemistry, textile engineering, colour management and dyehouse management with the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) as an undergraduate in the 90's.

Having worked for 12 years within dyehouses and vertical mill operations in both team leader and dyehouse manager roles at British Mohair Spinners and Milliken, in 1997 Ian's career developed into technical sales for Roaches International, a textile laboratory machinery manufacturer, with an inhouse research and development faciity, advising on market trends and current technology requirements for the textile industry.

Since 2009, Ian has been the managing director of Coloursmith Ltd – a textile consultancy practice.

The course includes:
* An introduction to fibres

* Dye classes

* Dye chemistry

* Dyeing machinery and processes

* Colour approval

* Testing

The online course has multi-choice quizzes after each section, a Certificate, and includes a Course Manual upon successful completion.
