Axminster weaving is used for the production of wool rugs, carpet squares, broadloom residential and contract carpets in multicoloured designs. Gripper-jacquard looms are the more versatile of the two types manufactured and their versatility has been enhanced by the introduction of electronic jacquards. Spool-gripper looms are somewhat more productive and have infinite scope for colour and design, but are more suitable for longer production runs.
Information is given on the requirements for raw materials and the variety of carpet constructions that can be produced on Axminster looms. This report does not cover advances made since 2002.
